Fresh thinking to
A pop-up playgroup for vulnerable children and a team
of parenting coaches are among 13 initiatives to receive
grants under the state government’s Maternal and Child
Health Service Innovation (MCH) Fund.
Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos
recently announced that local governments will receive
grants between $30,000 and $100,000 under the fund.
The Towong Shire has received maximum funding
of $100,000 to administer the ‘My Family First’ pilot
It will help people who are experiencing family violence
and is a collaborative regional partnership project
involving the Towong, Indigo and Alpine Shire Councils.
The program will enhance support for women and
children and families experiencing family violence who
have limited access to specialist services due to their
It will deliver tailored workshops to enhance
collaboration between early years services for long term
sustainable social care; raise the profile of MCH in the
community and driving up participation; and streamline
communication across early years services through the
use of software.
“The grants support fresh, creative thinking about how
MCH services can better support vulnerable families at
the early stages of a child’s life,” Minister for Families
and Children, Jenny Mikakos, said.
“Local services will put into practice innovative
strategies that strengthen engagement with families
experiencing vulnerability, and ensure there is adequate
support for those who need it most at a crucial stage of a
child’s development,” she said.
Following the rollout of these local initiatives, successful
experiences and results will be shared with MCH
services across the state.
Database protects animals
CFA has partnered with an Australian-first project that
aims to provide better protection of horses and other
companion animals during bushfires.
The National Equine Database (NED) has been
developed by CFA volunteer Jenna Kelley, founder of
the Walking Forward Disaster Relief Team.
The database works by linking equine owners with
property owners who have the capacity to temporarily
house animals during bushfires and other emergencies.
By networking through the database pet owners in
bushfire prone areas can establish plans to move their
animals to a nominated safe place on days of predicted
peak fire danger.
The database can be accessed at www.tepscon.
