The Open Garden fundraising event at
Lucyvale last weekend was an outstanding
success, raising almost $3000 for Corryong
Held at Kaye and David Laverty’s
property ‘The Wattles’, the two-day affair
was organised by the Laverty family and
the Corryong Parents Club to raise funds
to improve educational opportunities for
Club secretary Petrina Hewatt said the
event attracted more than 200 visitors,
some travelling from as far away as
Melbourne and Tumut, with both days
proving popular thanks to some rare spring
“Kaye and the Laverty family went to an
amazing effort to help us put on a fabulous
weekend,” she said.
“We were also very lucky to have strong
support from sponsors, both locally and
nationally and from numerous parents
who donated food or gave their time.”
Visitors were also treated to music by
Corryong College band members and
enjoyed a striking display of metal
sculptures presented by the school’s Year
A scarecrow competition and treasure
hunt fired up the imaginations of younger
children with many taking a haul of
prizes home from the weekend.
The Paull & Scollard Scarecrow
Competition: Lila Mason, 1st; Jessica
Martin, 2nd; Jo Mason, 3rd; and
encouragement awards were given to
Patrick Mason, Ned Stanton, Ruby
Jean and Charlotte Klippel, Mac Brindley,
Thailia Whitehead, Belinda Chamberlain,
Tyler Pryse, Abi Davis and Jack Laverty.
• Treasure Hunt: Ned Stanton, 1st; Mac
Brindley, 2nd; Matilda Stanton, 3rd;
Maddie McKimmie, 4th, Ruby McCourt,
5th; Grace McCourt, 6th; Poppy Bond, 7th;
and Harrison Nicholas, 8th.
The lucky garden gate prize went to Martin
Dorman 1st who received vouchers valued
at $50 from Bunnings and Peards Albury,
seedlings and pot; and second was Grace
Middleton who won hair care products and
a style voucher from Lisa Greenhill and a
hair dryer from Harvey Norman.
Guess the number of lolly competitions:
Lance Noonan won the $100 Stihl voucher
from Roger C Brown, while Brian Spurgeon
won the gardening pack and the gluten-free
lolly jars were won by Ollie Ross.
Garden show supports school
Students Abigail Davis, Lachie Martin and
Ben Hewatt entertained garden visitors.
